Synopsis -
an update on the achievements of the consortium so far and our future
plans
Electrical power networks are a vital enabling technology to the successful
implementation of renewable low carbon energy sources. The SUPERGEN FutureNet
Consortium is making a major contribution to understanding how networks
need to change so as to support and encourage such sources while providing
the standards of service that customers expect.
At this event - jointly sponsored by the IET and the IEEE - you will be
updated on the work that has been going on over the last three years in
the consortium – which forms part of the Supergen initiative funded by
the Research Councils Energy Programme. The focus of the activity has
been on researching future network technologies able to support a sustainable
energy policy for the UK. The approach is multi-disciplinary. It has involved
looking at a range of topics including engineering and technical aspects,
the role of economics and markets, and the attitudes of people and society.
FutureNet's vision for its work is shown
below and this has guided all that has been done
" The challenge facing the consortium is very significant: it
encompasses the search for engineering solutions to the technical problems
of a high reliance on renewable energy resources, the development of economic
ideas that support renewable energy, analysis of the social acceptability
of engineering solutions and the exploration of scenarios for the far
future of the electrical energy system (including the possible substitution
of another vector in place of electricity). The interdependences of the
challenges and the interdisciplinary nature of the work call for flexibility,
imagination and careful co-ordination of effort from the many contributors."
In addition we want to outline our plans for the future
- which are called FlexNet - which have recently been
given approval for funding. We will provide ample opportunity for you
to comment and question and help to shape this future work.
Dynamics
This event is planned to be an informative event that will also encourage
the delegates to contribute their views and experience during the discussion
forums. The day will also provide an excellent networking opportunity
during the scheduled breaks and lunch.
