The third FlexNet assembly took place on the 5th and 6th May at the University of Cardiff. The assembly was attended by research assistants, post graduate students, staff and investigators working on the FlexNet programme as well industrial sponsors. The programme comprised meetings for the Steering Committee, Management Executive and Industrial Sponsors, as well as presentations, discussions, workshops and a poster session.

Day 1

Poster session/demonstrations of validation and showcases Posters will be split into two groups (A and B) in the exhibition room.

How to achieve the Low Carbon Transition Plan and what FLEXNET can feed into achieving the 2020 targets?

13.30 – 14.00: Keynote – Prof. Peter Pearson, Director, LCRI.
14.00 – 16.00: Three groups (20-25 each) will discuss

  • I – Network regulatory and economic issues (led by Matt Leach)
  • II – Connection issues (led by Gareth Harrison)
  • III – Operational issues (led by Raj Agrawal)
    Structure of session – Group leader sets out what needs to be done and suggests a list of questions that should be addressed. These are discussed and agreed. The group is then split into 2 sub groups of around 10 each to discuss some (or all) of the questions and to prepare a 5-minute presentation for the plenary session.

  • 16:00 – 17:00

    Report from small groups and plenary discussion (6 presentations, one from each sub-group, 5 minute presentation, 5 minute discussion)

    Thursday 6th May

    Workshops based on Annual Report themes*
    1. Intermittency – led by Goran Strbac – Room 4
    2. System Operation – led by Graeme Burt – Room 3
    3. HVDC – led by Jun Liang – Room 5
    4. More Electric Future – led by Nick Jenkins – Exhibition area
    5. Visions and Scenario – led by Richard Green – Room 6
    6. Customer Participation – led by Jacopo Torriti – Room 2
    7. Active Distribution – led by Tim Green – Room 1
    Each workshop should comprise 2 presentations by RAs or PhDs about their work and discussion. The discussion will focus on;

  • How each student can share their work with fellow students?
  • Are there synergies between any of the projects?
  • What are the impacts of each of the projects being undertaken under this theme – both medium and long–term
    Prepare a presentation for the afternoon session indicate the impact of the work being undertaken under each theme in the medium and short term
    * Room allocation will follow Registration.
